I sat here staring at the screen and chatting on MSN as I tried to come up with a suitable title for this week’s podcast. And there really wasn’t much coming to mind.. so I went with what I went with - it’ll make sense once you listen.. ish..

Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

They said it’d snow over the weekend.. and it did! I snapped this pics out of my lounge window this morning (that would be “living room” to most of you?). Sorry about the glare/window reflections. Click the pics for larger versions:

Then I was looking at KatKam and between 8:25 and 8:30 they moved the camera - check out these shots:

You’ve got to love the internet. No really, you do. Not in the same way that you’ve got to love Richard Branson for all his cool Virgin stuff (that Josh maintains he doesn’t have to love).. but I digress.. what am I blogging here?

I was surfing around aimlessly.. saw a neato video on the making of the Sony Bravia commercial with all the bouncing rubber balls (Check it out here, it’s a really awesome 3 minutes).. then I came across this - A guy called Mark Horowitz, who spent 7 days living in his new Nissan Sentra. The 2 minute video explains what he’s doing and the rules he’s living by.

From there, I surfed over to nissanusa.com to see what it was all about, which then linked me to http://7daysinasentra.blogs.com/, his blog site which is full of cool clips and funny video snippets. Seriously, check it out - I figured if I spent the past 20 minutes checking out this shit the least I could do was share it. And if you like, dislike, wish you could get those 3 minutes of your life back, whatever - feel free to comment and share the joy!

Check out Rob’s photoblog. He posts a picture a day, and it’s really well put together - simple, clean presentation with effective navigation. I like it a lot.

I was reading the Vancouver Sun today and was stunned to see yet more coverage of the whole “We were duped by the Borat movie people” fuckwittage.

I’ve read the same story about 17 times now about how the people were told the film wouldn’t be shown in the US, the people were plied with drinks before they signed the waiver form, the people were abducted by aliens and hypnotised just for the movie, etc etc. Ok, I made that last one up, but it’s almost as ridiculous as the real claims that are being made.

People. Honestly! Here’s the deal: Sure, you may have been slightly misled.. some might even say duped.. but ultimately you signed a legal document and gave them permission to show the clips with you in them. Didn’t want to be on the big screen, being an ass, being laughed at? BZZZZT you shouldn’t have signed the form! It really is that easy! So instead of getting all het up and sweaty about it, take your money, buy some booze, and laugh it off with your friends. No one really cares that much. Give it a week or two and it’ll all blow over. Either that, or face up to what you said and stand behind it?

I meant to rant about this in my podcast (which may have been slightly more entertaining), but I forgot. Oh well.. at least we got a blog update out of it eh? ;-)

I’m loving the word “turbidity” right now! (although I’m loving the actual turbidity of Vancouver water slightly less..) And with no other title springing immediately to mind (there’s no real theme to this week’s show), I went with the title I did “just cos”.

Link: podcast63.mp3 (24:38, 11.3Mb)

In this week’s show:

  • Aren’t libraries funny?
  • Christmas decorations and Santa Parade rant
  • The water situation in Vancouver (aka high turbidity!)
  • Larging it for the weekend (aka going clubbing on Friday night)
  • TV that rocks: Dr Who, 3 Lbs, Life On Mars
  • Blog and email spam rant
  • ..finishing with an ending that’s a lot better than many have been, of late :-)

Stuff I Forgot: When I was talking about seeing Stranger Than Fiction, the bit I forgot to mention was that I found it slightly surreal everytime they said the word “Crick”, being as how it’s my last name too.

So there I am, on my podcast, saying check out the blog but blah blah I’m a slack arsed twat who hasn’t blogged much lately, but I’ll remedy that this week.. and here I am, finally, following through and waffling on about some stuff going on in my world…

UCLA Taser Student: I read about this on digg.com this morning and I was stunned. It made me angry, and also dispondant - sad that we have such sad states of affairs out there. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, go to YouTube and search for “UCLA taser” - you’ll find it in no time. The 6 minute video shows university police using a taser on a student who failed to produce his student ID when asked, something that’s required in the library after 11pm. The bad thing is not that he was tasered (although that is pretty bad on its own), but more so that the guy is shouting “Stand up! Stand up!” at the guy, then tasers him again for not complying… BZZZZT how fucking stupid are you? You’ve just tasered the guy.. his whole nervous system is in shock and it’s pretty fucking unlikely he can stand up at all right now.. so you go do it again? for “non-compliance”?! Oh buddy, what the FUCK?! Check out the video and feel free to leave feedback here if you’re so inclined. The fact that the tasered guy’s name is Mostafa Tabatabainejad probably didn’t help matters. First hit in Google is this one: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15731040/ - It’s worth a read.

Dirty Water: The entire Greater Vancouver Regional District is currently under a boil water advisory. The water coming out of taps ranges from cloudy white to dirty brown, depending on where you are, and it’s kinda gross. I love the word they use to describe that stuff though. Turbidity would be the word. It’s great. Reminds me of “turgid” which is something completely different, or “turban” which just makes me laugh. You measure turbidity in NTUs (or Nephelometric Turbidity Units - umm.. huh?!). The guy from Vancouver Coastal Health said they issue an advisory when the level’s above 5 NTUs (although Wikipedia says the US standard for clean water is 1 NTU?). Levels at the two main reservoirs feeding Vancouver had fallen from 90 to 60 in one and from 70 to 40 in another.. I think.. but either way, it’s still way high, leaving the water in the toilet murky looking.. yuck!

Mario Party: You can only rent this game so many times before you clue in “Hang on, I’m half way to owning this, why don’t I just buy a copy?” - so buy a copy I did! I’m the proud owner of Mario Party 7 for my Gamecube. Last night Alyson and Justin came round, we ate munchies, we ate pizza, we drank beer, and we played games! Good times all round, apart from the fact that I came last.. BZZZT.. some bad luck from Bowser coupled with a CPU player that I’m sure was rigged meant that I was trailing behind for at least half the game. Oh well, it’s the taking part that counts, right?

Mad Work Week: Once again, a short work week doesn’t feel all that short. It’s like they cram 5 days of work in to 4 actual work days. Lots going on, lots to do, and tomorrow’s meant to be the day I find out if I get the team lead position I interviewed for last week. That said, I have a feeling that my boss is in training all day, and we also have a team event in the afternoon from 2 till 4 (which I think means “late lunch, possibly with booze”), so we’ll see.. I’m not holding my breath.

Hmm.. any more for any more? Nah, I think that’s your lot for now.. I’ll try and keep the updates coming.. meanwhile, feel free to comment! :-p

I’ve never had live audience partcipation before. And I might not ever again - I haven’t listened back to this week’s show yet.. we’ll see.. Podcasting at a reasonable hour, but still sounding as crazy as ever (the added pressure of knowing you’ve got an audience as you’re doing the whole thing? maybe!). Here’s how this week’s show looks:

Link: podcast62.mp3 (26:19, 12.1Mb)

In this week’s show:

  • Bad music in the UK charts
  • Surreal dreams
  • Shanelle’s voicemails about hep shots
  • My week in review (including work rants)
  • Words from Josh and Alex via the speakerphone
  • A discussion about pissing in the shower (what’s your take?)
  • I give out a tag card code you can use at REL8.com!
  • ..finishing with a slightly fumbled request for feedback!
